(01m19s) How worry should we be about the Zika virus? We have an update coming to our newsroom. The virus is spreading explosively in the Americas, that’s according to world health officials who are holding an emergency meeting on Monday. And their words again - the level of alarm is extremely high. So here is what we know.

Since October, twenty fourteen, almost four thousand babies have been born in Brazil with underdeveloped brains and small heads, a condition known as microcephaly, or you might also hear it pronounced microcephaly. And although not proven, doctors suspect that the infection with Zika virus during pregnancy may be the cause.

The virus is spreading across South and Central America. And the World Health Organization is warning that all the Americas are at risk. Some areas have declared a state of emergency. Doctors have described it as a pandemic in progress and some are even advising women in affected countries to delay getting pregnant.

(02m29s) Zika was first identified in the nineteen forties in Africa. And studies then show that there were human infections in Africa and also Asia. It wasn’t thought to be a serious disease. And what happened more recently is we started to see that the virus is starting spread outside of Asia and Africa… And it really only the fact that we started to see an association with a serious illness called microcephaly that we started to ___ notice the virus.

-- We think Zika, as you said, originated in Uganda and it’s even named for a forest outside of Kampala, but we don’t hear about those high rates of babies born with microcephaly there.

-- Well, we don’t know whether the virus has changed behavior, it would be unlikely but not impossible. So it may have just suddenly had the ability to start causing these birth defects. But what more likely is the fact that in Africa and in Asia, the virus has been around for decades. And so people would have been exposed to the virus, they would have been potentially exposed to the virus very early in life because undoubtedly there going to be outbreaks happening all of the time in these places otherwise the virus wouldn’t maintain. And so what happens as you become exposed to the virus? You then probably develop immunity. And in fact immunity is long lived. Then it would protect you from future infections. Importantly, future infections might occur when you at child-bearing age so that we wouldn’t see these problems because people wouldn’t become infected during pregnancy.
