Now, some people might think that rules are just boring! But rules are important really, aren’t they? On the roads and in lots of other places the rules are there to keep you safe. These rules of the roads are called ‘The Highway Code,’ and they are important.

There are lots of rules in schools, too. I wonder if you can think of any. How about ‘No running in the corridors.’ Ha-ha. Have you got that one in your school?

Are you following any rules right now? Being quiet? Sitting still? Ha-ha, good.

It was the middle of autumn, but the sun was still high in the sky. The river water was clear and the animals were getting ready for winter.

The beavers were especially busy. Well, beavers are usually busy. And you might not know this but they are also very, very clever. You know, beavers are brilliant builders. They used their big front teeth to break bark and branches from trees, then they used this, together with logs and plants, rocks and mud to make dams, which block the flow of river water. The dams cause pools of water to form and this is where the beavers build their houses. The houses are called lodges and they are big. They have room and everything. So, yes, beavers are really clever and busy creatures. But this was their busiest time because they had to make sure that their dams and lodges were ready for the cold weather.

We’ve been thinking today about rules. Why we need them and how they can help us? Some rules like wearing seatbelts, stopping at traffic lights and no running in the corridors they are to keep us safe. But some rules like being kind to others can help us all get along together.

Think for a moment about a rule that you know. Choose just one. Think about it. Why is this rule important? What would happen if you didn’t follow it?
