Japan has the world's second highest adoption rate - more than eighty thousand a year. But these are not the adoptions understood elsewhere, most adult men in their twenties or thirties. Usually they are adopted by their wife's family. And the main purpose of the adoption is so they can take the family's business. --Documentary Archive / It's all in the Name: Adoption in Japan, BBC 2012/09/20

Reporter: More than ninety percent of Japanese companies are considered family businesses. And amazingly thirty thousand have a history of over a hundred years.
Man: Family business in Japan is very important. Traditionally speaking, families have been more important than individuals.

I think it was far more common with families in western part of Japan than eastern part of Japan where merchant families, people with family businesses chose the most capable successor through the marriage of their children. For example, if you had half a dozen sons and half a dozen daughters. If you were lucky to have a very capable son among half a dozen, then you would have him succeed. But chances are you don't have as capable a son as you want, therefore they actually search through their network to find an even more capable man to marry one of their daughters. It was a very pragmatic decision for that family business to survive. --Documentary Archive / It's all in the Name: Adoption in Japan, BBC 2012/09/20

But in case of emergency, you have to have a plan B. The main thing is that the best person should take over the business, not necessarily a biologic son. And I consider adoption. I consider passing it on to my daughter's husband if necessary. --Documentary Archive / It's all in the Name: Adoption in Japan, BBC 2012/09/20
