Aminta Arrington)

I posted myself a few feet away, and while pretending to consider the array of vegetables, watched a woman ask for a plastic bag, carefully pick out her eggs, then handed the bag to the woman behind the meat counter who weighed it and attached a price. As soon as she finished I copied her every move and was rewarded with a dozen eggs. Feeling more confident I took my groceries and headed for home. I still have no idea of what to expect in the coming days, but at least today we would be able to eat. --Speakers' Forum / An American Family in China, KUOW Seattle 2012/08/24

A few days later we walked our three children to the local kindergarten. Outside the gate were bicycles, motorcycles, three-wheeled carts, electrical bikes, and a few scooters. Grand fathers smoked while their grand children played at the playground. The lobby was packed as everyone try to register. No lines, no order, only a swarm of hands and arms and legs pushing forward. --Speakers' Forum / An American Family in China, KUOW Seattle 2012/08/24

--We wanted to experience the real China. We think this is the real China. What do you think?

They agreed.

-- Besides, Shandong people are famous for being friendly and warm hearted.

They nodded their heads and smiled.

--Speakers' Forum / An American Family in China, KUOW Seattle 2012/08/24

The gap in the education system is that we are taught to think originally, to think independently. And that is the highest order of thinking. That even if an idea is not that good at least if it's our own idea. Then it's worth something. And the Chinese are not taught that their own idea is worth something. They are taught that they should agree with the textbook, that they should give the answers back at the textbook has given them, that they should recite the standard answer. --Speakers' Forum / An American Family in China, KUOW Seattle 2012/08/24

I asked them to say their name, and their hometown, and their major, and something unique about themselves. That's pretty standard, right? So they said their name, and their hometown, and their major, and then they said, "I'm a common man. There is nothing unique about me." And every single one said that. And I dropped the question after that. And I really wondered, ah, you did, really myself(?) You know. What's wrong with my question? But there are two aspects of it. One is they are not really used to thinking about their uniqueness. But even more they are not used to talking about their uniqueness even if they know they have some unique ideas inside or that there is something special about them it is not talked about in a public forum. So that was where culturally I was putting them kind of in tough position. --Speakers' Forum / An American Family in China, KUOW Seattle 2012/08/24

Ah, it's awesome. I mean they can turn, they'll look at me and they'll speak to me in English, and then they'll turn to our neighbors and speak in Chinese without missing a bit. They don't need to internally translate. They don't need to think through the sentence structure. They can just switch back, forth, back, forth, back forth. But that being sad, we probably will be moving back to the US in the next few years. Then will be time to get them back in the American school system. --Speakers' Forum / An American Family in China, KUOW Seattle 2012/08/24
